Location Guide

Where To Stay
in the Valley

The Chamonix Valley has several distinct villages — here's how to pick the right base.

🏙️ Chamonix Centre

The heart of the action — pedestrian zone, best restaurants and bars, direct access to Brévent and Flégère lifts, and the Aiguille du Midi and Montenvers departure points. Most first-time visitors should stay here.

Best for: First-timers, non-skiers, après-ski

🏔️ Argentière

A charming traditional village 8km up the valley from Chamonix, directly below the Grands Montets ski area. Quieter, more authentic, and often cheaper than the centre. Connected by free valley bus and train.

Best for: Advanced skiers, TMB hikers, quiet stays

🌲 Les Houches

At the lower end of the valley, Les Houches is the most family-friendly and budget-friendly area. Its own ski area is gentler than the rest of Chamonix. The Mont Blanc Express train connects to the centre in 10 minutes.

Best for: Families, beginners, budget travellers

🚠 Les Praz / La Flégère

A quiet residential area at the valley floor between Chamonix and Argentière, with direct lift access to La Flégère and the Lac Blanc trail. Very peaceful and a short bike ride from the centre.

Best for: Hikers, couples, self-catering

Accommodation FAQs

Questions Answered

Where is the best place to stay in Chamonix?
For first-time visitors, Chamonix centre is the best base — walkable to the main lifts, restaurants, and attractions. For skiers focused on Les Grands Montets, Argentière is ideal. For families and beginners, Les Houches offers the most relaxed environment and some of the best value accommodation in the valley.
How much does accommodation cost in Chamonix?
Budget hostel dorms start around €30–50 per person. Mid-range hotel rooms cost €100–250 per night. Luxury hotels and boutique properties range from €250–500+. Private chalets for groups can reach €5,000+ per week. Prices peak at Christmas, New Year, February half-term, and mid-July to mid-August.
Should I stay in Chamonix centre or Argentière?
Stay in Chamonix centre if you want the best access to restaurants, nightlife, the Aiguille du Midi, and Brévent–Flégère skiing. Stay in Argentière if you're focused on skiing Les Grands Montets, hiking the upper valley, or prefer a quieter, more village-like atmosphere. The free valley bus connects the two in 15 minutes.
When should I book accommodation in Chamonix?
Book as early as possible for peak periods — Christmas, New Year, February half-term, and July–August can sell out 6–12 months in advance. Shoulder periods (January excluding half-term, March–April, June, September) have better availability and significantly lower prices. Last-minute deals are rare in Chamonix.
