The Chamonix Valley has several distinct villages — here's how to pick the right base.
The heart of the action — pedestrian zone, best restaurants and bars, direct access to Brévent and Flégère lifts, and the Aiguille du Midi and Montenvers departure points. Most first-time visitors should stay here.
Best for: First-timers, non-skiers, après-skiA charming traditional village 8km up the valley from Chamonix, directly below the Grands Montets ski area. Quieter, more authentic, and often cheaper than the centre. Connected by free valley bus and train.
Best for: Advanced skiers, TMB hikers, quiet staysAt the lower end of the valley, Les Houches is the most family-friendly and budget-friendly area. Its own ski area is gentler than the rest of Chamonix. The Mont Blanc Express train connects to the centre in 10 minutes.
Best for: Families, beginners, budget travellersA quiet residential area at the valley floor between Chamonix and Argentière, with direct lift access to La Flégère and the Lac Blanc trail. Very peaceful and a short bike ride from the centre.
